Uncle Bardie’s Spotlight Creator: Medgar Evers

Once a week on Friday, Uncle Bardie celebrates the creativity in others by shining a Spotlight on a movie, a song or a creator. It’s Black History Month and this week’s Spotlight Creator is Medgar Evers:

The Legacy of Medgar Evers

It was a time when Giants walked the land. Giants like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Cesar Chavez, Rachel Carson, Rosa Parks, Betty Friedan, Joan Baez, Bobby Kennedy and Medgar Evers. These were folks who often put their lives on the line in the fight for justice. Today I want to honor one of those people, Medgar Evers.

If you believe your vote don’t count, tell that to Medgar Evers. It cost him his life because he was trying to register citizens to vote. He knew something we often forget. Our vote does count. If it doesn’t, why is it that there are those who want to take the vote away or prevent citizens from voting? And who would murder a man for trying to register citizens to vote?

Uncle Bardie’s Movie of the Week: Selma

Once a week on Monday, Uncle Bardie shares a movie with his Readers he gives a big two thumbs up. It will simply be a short excerpt or a trailer. Uncle Bardie might even throw in a reflection on the movie. If so, it will make an appearance below the video. So pop some popcorn and give yourself a treat. This week’s movie is “Selma” (2014) in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the upcoming Black History Month:

This one left me breathless.

Nine Martyrs in the Arms of Mama Emmanuel

Nine Martyrs in the Arms of Mama Emmanuel,
nine welcoming.
Nine Martyrs in the Arms of Mama Emmanuel,
nine praying.
Nine Martyrs in the Arms of Mama Emmanuel,
nine dying.

Oh, Mama. Oh, Mama.
A trinity of threes.

Three saints for the Father,
Three saints for the Son,
Three saints for the Holy Ghost.
Oh, Mama. Oh, Mama.

Devil, he come down South to Charleston town,
wearing a mask.
Dylann Storm Roof, the mask on Satan’s face
that Wednesday night.
Spraying out hell from the barrel of a gun,
spraying out hate.

Oh, Mama. Oh, Mama.
Nine bullets he fired.

Three shots for the Rebel flag,
Three shots for the K K K,
Three shots for George Zimmerman.
Oh, Mama. Oh, Mama.

Nine saints in the Temple of the Lord,
this morning.
Nine saints in the Book of Life,

Nine saints at the Feet of Jesus,
this morning.

Oh, Mama. Oh, Mama.
Nine names in the Book.

Clementia, Daniel and Ethel Lee,
Tywanza, Depayne and Susie,
Sharonda, Cynthia and Myra.
Oh, Mama. Oh, Mama.

Nine Martyrs in the Arms of Mama Emmanuel,
nine welcoming.
Nine Martyrs in the Arms of Mama Emmanuel,
